New Delhi. Jasmine Bhasin Corneal Damage: In an interview, TV actress Jasmine Bhasin told that she had come to attend an event in Delhi on 17th July. While getting ready for the event, as soon as she put on contact lenses, she started feeling pain in her eyes, which gradually increased. However, due to her work commitment, she completed that event. She told that she was not able to see properly during the event and with the help of her team, she somehow completed the event. When she consulted a doctor, it was found that she had corneal damage.
In such a situation, it is quite surprising that wearing contact lenses can cause such damage to the eyes. Usually contact lenses are not only used in place of glasses, but many people also wear them to enhance the beauty of their eyes. In such a situation, the emergence of this news is quite worrying, because if one is not careful about this, this accident can happen to anyone. Therefore, to know what things should be taken care of while wearing contact lenses, we spoke to Dr. Saumya Sharma (Senior Consultant of Sharp Sight Eye Hospital).
Dr. Sharma said that although contact lenses are a more convenient and attractive alternative to glasses, extreme caution is required while wearing them, otherwise the eyes can be seriously damaged. However, many people are not aware that if contact lenses are not used properly, corneal ulcers and infections can occur, which can also lead to permanent loss of vision.
Are contact lenses harmful?
The most common problem caused by not wearing contact lenses properly is lack of oxygen in the cornea. This happens due to wearing lenses continuously or sleeping with lenses on.
Lack of oxygen in the cornea causes Corneal Neovascularisation, i.e. new and abnormal blood vessels start growing in the cornea to compensate for the lack of oxygen. This condition can not only cause problems in vision but also increases the risk of eye infections. Sometimes it can also become an obstacle in corrective eye surgery in the future.
How to use contact lenses correctly?
- For safe and correct use of contact lenses, it is most important to take complete care of hygiene. For this, wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching the lenses, so that no germs get into them.
- Use only the solution recommended by your eye doctor to clean and store contact lenses, as expired or spoiled solution can cause eye infections.
- To prevent bacteria etc. from growing on contact lenses, keep the lens case clean and change it from time to time. Change the solution in the lens case daily and wash the case every third day and dry it thoroughly in the sun.
- Wear lenses only for the duration prescribed by the doctor. Wearing lenses for a long time causes protein and lipids to accumulate in the eyes, which can make the lenses feel very uncomfortable and also increases the risk of infection.
- Get your eyes checked regularly. This will help you to know about any problem related to the lenses or any other eye problem on time, which will help in easing treatment and speed up recovery. Also, the doctor can give you information from time to time about how to take care of the lenses and what are the better options available according to your eyes and lifestyle.
