News Topical, Digital Desk : Two children were badly trapped due to sudden rise in water level of Satluj river in Khangar village of Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. However, it is a matter of relief that both these children were rescued safely due to the promptness of NTPC Koldam Project officials and bravery of some villagers. This incident happened on Wednesday evening, when 3 children - 8-year-old Krish, his 10-year-old sister Mannat and 12-year-old Anuj Thakur were playing on the banks of Satluj river.
When the girl made noise, the villagers reached the spot
According to officials, the 800 MW Koldam project located upstream was releasing water for power generation. A siren was sounded for this. As the water level rose, Krish and Anuj sat on a big stone in the middle of the river, while Mannat somehow came out of the water. Mannat raised an alarm, following which many people from Mandi and Bilaspur districts gathered on both sides of the river. As soon as Anjana Kumari, a ward member of Lower Bhated Panchayat, got this news, she immediately contacted the dam officials.
The dam management immediately closed the gates of the dam
On receiving information about the children being trapped, the dam management immediately closed the dam gates, which reduced the flow of water. When the water level decreased, 55-year-old Rajendra Kumar of Nichli Bhater village jumped into the river with the help of ropes and reached the children and rescued both of them safely. Rajendra, a driver by profession, said, 'On Wednesday evening around 6:30 pm, I got the news that two children were trapped in the water. I immediately ran to rescue them.' However, closing the dam gates stopped power generation for some time and also caused other losses.
People expressed their gratitude to the dam management
On Thursday, the parents of the children, public representatives and other villagers reached the office of NTPC Koldam and expressed their gratitude to the management. On this occasion, Rajendra Kumar, who saved the children, was also felicitated. In this way, due to the mutual cooperation of the villagers and the dam management, the lives of two innocent children were saved, otherwise a major accident could have happened.
