News Topical, Digital Desk : Between 2018 and 2025, 17 Indians studying in Canada died due to " violent attacks." Canada has the highest number of Indian students killed abroad, followed by the United States.
In a written reply to a question from AIMIM member Asaduddin Owaisi, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh presented the data on deaths of Indian students in various countries in the form of a country-wise table.
According to the data, the total number of Indian students studying in various foreign universities due to violent attacks during 2018-2025 are: Canada (17), USA (9), Australia (3), UK (1), China (1), Denmark (1), Germany (1), Grenada (1) and Kyrgyzstan (2).
Owaisi asked the Ministry of External Affairs whether the government was aware of the "rising violent incidents against Indian students abroad and whether any timely investigation has been conducted in this regard." Singh said, "The government gives high priority to the safety and security of Indian students abroad and monitors violent incidents against them.
Any violent and unpleasant incidents against them are immediately taken up by Indian Missions/Posts with the authorities of the concerned countries to ensure that they are properly investigated and the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
He said that Indian missions and posts maintain regular contact with Indian students studying in foreign universities and conduct pre-orientation sessions to inform them about the potential challenges, risks, and precautions to be taken upon their arrival. In emergency situations, the Government of India has conducted large-scale evacuation operations to ensure the safety of Indian nationals, including students.
Raised the issue of 'Nagar Kirtan' with the New Zealand government
The Ministry of External Affairs has received information that a 'Nagar Kirtan' organised by the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat in New Zealand was allegedly disrupted by a group known for its strong social protectionism. The Indian government has taken up the issue with its Kiwi counterpart, the Centre informed Parliament on Friday.
