Dhaka: Bangladesh's minorities' organisation 'Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad' has demanded a free and fair inquiry into the communal violence in the country under the supervision of the United Nations.
On Thursday, the organization's vice president Nirmal Rozario said that between August 4 and 20, a total of 2,010 incidents of communal violence took place in 68 of the 76 districts and metropolitan areas across the country, resulting in the death of nine people. 69 places of worship were attacked, vandalized, looted and set on fire.
He also demanded withdrawal of false cases against council general secretary Rana Dasgupta and other leaders, end to the ongoing communal violence and arrest and punishment of the culprits. He said that nationwide protests and rallies will be held across the country including Dhaka on Saturday to press for the demands.
Occupied the lands of some minority families
Giving details of the communal violence that broke out during the political turmoil that ousted Sheikh Hasina from the PM post, Nirmal said in a press conference that some business establishments of minorities were looted, vandalised and set on fire. Nirmal said these families are now living in very poor conditions. He said the maximum violence took place in Khulna division, where four women were raped. Lands of some minority families were taken over.
