News Topical, Digital Desk : The district court on Monday gave a historic verdict in the heinous case of rape of a 3.5-year-old girl in DPS school of Greater Noida, UP. The special POCSO court held Chandidas, a resident of West Bengal, guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The accused has been fined ₹24,000. If he does not pay the fine, he may have to undergo an additional 6 months of imprisonment.

At the same time, the court also blamed the school administration for serious negligence in this case and ordered the DPS Society to pay a compensation of ₹ 10 lakh to the victim's family. This amount will be deposited in the District Legal Services Authority within a month, which will be transferred to the victim under the compensation scheme.

The girl got justice after 6 years

It is worth noting that this case was registered in 2018, when an FIR was lodged against Chandidas in Surajpur Kotwali. During the hearing that lasted for about 6 years, 12 witnesses were examined. The court of Special Judge Vijay Kumar Himanshu convicted the accused under three sections of IPC and POCSO Act - Section 376 (rape of a girl under 12 years of age), POCSO Section 6 (aggravated sexual assault) and POCSO Section 10 (sexual violence in an educational institution).

As per the punishment, under section 376 and POCSO section 6, life imprisonment with a fine of ₹10,000 and ₹12,000 respectively, while under POCSO section 10, 7 years imprisonment and a fine of ₹2,000 was imposed.

The incident took place in the school premises

Special Public Prosecutor Chavanpal Bhati argued in the court that the crime took place in the school premises, where the safety of children should have been the top priority. He said that this incident has left a permanent scar on the life of the victim and if strict punishment is not given, it will send a wrong message to the society.

This decision of the court is being considered a tough and necessary step towards justice not only by the victim's family but also by the entire city. This decision gives a strong message to all educational institutions to give priority to the safety of children.
