News Topical, Digital Desk : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reached the German capital Berlin on Wednesday. Here he will hold talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as talk to US President Donald Trump through video conferencing.
This exercise of Zelensky is being considered important before Trump's talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. On one hand Zelensky is saying that he will not leave any part of Ukraine's land, on the other hand Russia has said that its goals regarding military action have not changed at all. It will not return the captured land of Ukraine under any circumstances.
Talks with Trump will take place after talks with European leaders
German government spokesman Stephan Meyer said that the purpose of Chancellor Merz's talks with Trump is to clarify Europe's thinking and position. Zelensky will talk to Trump after meeting and holding talks with European leaders.
In his Telegram channel account, Zelensky has said that there is no sign that Russia is going to end the war. He appealed to the US and European allies to put maximum pressure on Russia so that it agrees to end the war and bring peace to Ukraine.
What did Trump say?
Trump has said that he wants to see how serious Putin is about ending the Ukraine war. This will be known in the meeting to be held in Alaska. So far Trump has said that Ukraine may have to give up some land for a ceasefire. Russia may also have to give some land in return.
European countries are afraid of this
But Russia has not reacted to this statement of Trump. The talks between Trump and Putin are being held with the aim of ending the Ukraine war but Ukraine has not been included in it, so European countries fear that the result of the talks may be against the interests of Ukraine.
Since European countries are helping Ukraine in the war, they feel that the outcome of the talks will affect them as well. However, in his latest statement, Trump has said that he wishes to have joint talks with Putin and Zelensky in the future.
Russia close to seizing key Ukrainian city
In the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Russian army came close to capturing the eastern city of Pokrovsk after a long battle on Wednesday. Pokrovsk is a major industrial city in eastern Ukraine which Russia has been trying to capture for a long time.
If Russia gains full control of this city before the talks in Alaska, then Putin will be able to put forward his conditions for ceasefire more strongly. Whereas Russia's oil pipeline and pumping station are reported to have been damaged in the latest drone attacks in Ukraine.
