News Topical, Digital Desk : Today, the Supreme Court can give an important decision regarding stray dogs in Delhi-NCR. A bench of three judges of the Supreme Court will start giving its decision at 10:30 am. On August 14, a bench of three judges had reserved its decision after the hearing. The Supreme Court bench will decide today whether any kind of stay is needed on the double bench's decision to keep stray dogs in shelter homes. 

Will the interim order remain in place or will a stay be imposed?

Earlier, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court had given the decision to send stray dogs to shelter homes, against which a three-judge bench was formed after an appeal. A demand was made before this bench to put an interim stay on the decision to keep stray dogs in shelter homes, on which the court had reserved the decision. Now today the Supreme Court will issue an interim order and clarify whether any kind of stay is needed on the order to keep stray dogs in shelter homes? A three-judge bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria is going to give this important decision.

What instructions did the Supreme Court give?

Earlier, after the decision of two judges of the Supreme Court, dog lovers opposed the campaign to catch stray dogs. Protests were also held at many places regarding this. In view of the increasing cases of dog bites, the Supreme Court took cognizance and directed that- 

  • NCT Delhi, MCD and NDMC should start picking up stray dogs from all areas, especially from sensitive areas and outskirts of the city, as soon as possible.
  • Stray dogs should be caught and kept in shelter homes. Maintain a record of stray dogs caught and kept in shelter homes.
  • A report should be submitted in 2 months on the infrastructure of shelter homes in Delhi-NCR.
  • The dog shelter will have adequate staff to sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs.
  • Stray dogs will not be left on streets/colonies/public places.
  • CCTV cameras will be installed to ensure that no dog is left or taken out.
  • If any person or organization prevents picking up stray dogs, strict action will be taken against them.

In 2024, 37.15 lakh cases of dog bites were registered across the country

The Supreme Court issued this order on 28 July. Along with this, instructions were given to set up a helpline for those who are victims of dog bites. After this, during the hearing before a bench of three judges, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had said that in the year 2024, 37.15 lakh cases of dog bites were registered across the country, that is, about 10 thousand people were bitten by dogs every day. According to the WHO report, 305 people died due to dog bites in the year 2023. During this hearing, the bench of three judges had said that the court is also sympathetic towards the lives of stray dogs.
