In this month, special prayers are offered in all the Shiva temples of the country. Kanwariyas bring Gangajal from far and wide to perform Abhishek of Shivalinga. In Sawan, water is offered on Shivalinga, which is called Jalabhishek.
In simple words, Jalabhishek means offering water to Lord Shiva. This gives him coolness. This tradition is associated with the incident of Lord Shiva drinking poison. Jalabhishek is a simple and common method, which can be done daily by going to the Shiva temple or even at home. There is no special method for Jalabhishek.
Chanting of mantras takes place during Rudrabhishek
At the same time, when the Shivling is worshipped with Vedic mantras and special materials, it is called Rudrabhishek. The Shivling is anointed by Brahmins with different materials for different wishes while chanting mantras.
Rudrashtadhyayi is generally recited during this time. During this time, the Shivling is anointed first with water and then with five holy liquids including milk, honey, curd, ghee and pure water.
Rudrabhishek can be performed at home as well as in a Shiva temple. This ritual is mainly performed for mental peace, peace of planetary defects, child happiness, freedom from diseases and fulfillment of wishes.
