Why is Rishi Panchami celebrated?

Rishi Panchami is not a festival, but women celebrate it to pay homage to the Sapta Rishis or seven sages and to purify themselves from the menstrual disorder. Hindu women are not allowed to cook food, participate in any religious activity, or touch any family member during menstruation. Not following these guidelines leads to menstrual disorder, and to get rid of this menstrual disorder, it is advised to observe Rishi Panchami fast so that the person can attain salvation.

Why are the Seven Sages worshipped?

On the day of Rishi Panchami, the Saptarishis i.e. Rishi Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vashishtha, Gautam, Jamadagni and Vishwamitra are worshipped. These seven sages are considered to be the incarnations of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. By observing this fast, one gets freedom from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly.
