Now, two members of the West Virginia National Guard stationed in Washington were shot on Wednesday, just a few blocks from the White House. At least three people, including two National Guard members, were injured in the shooting. All the injured have been hospitalized.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll said the National Guard troops were on patrol when the attacker came around a corner and ambushed them. Following the shooting, other Guard members surrounded the suspect and arrested him. He is currently being questioned.

Following the shooting, the Trump administration immediately ordered 500 more National Guard members to be sent to Washington. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said President Donald Trump had requested the additional troops. According to the latest government update, there are currently 2,188 troops deployed in the joint task force operating in the city.

The National Guard's presence in Washington has been a contentious issue for months, sparking court battles and a broader public policy debate about the Trump administration's use of the military to combat what officials consider an uncontrollable crime problem.
