News Topical, Digital Desk : President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday that South Africa will symbolically hand over the G20 presidency to an "empty chair" in the absence of US leadership at next week's summit.

He also stressed the need to improve trade relations with Washington. He cited widely debunked claims about white South Africans being 'murdered' and driven from their land.

Why did America not participate ?

"I've said before that I don't want to hand over the presidency to an empty chair. But there will be an empty chair there, so perhaps I'll symbolically hand over the empty chair and then speak to President Trump," Ramaphosa said while answering questions from reporters in Soweto.

In fact, US President Donald Trump had said last week that no government official would participate in the G-20 summit to be held in South Africa on November 22-23, because according to him human rights are being violated there.

South African officials have denied that anyone in the black-majority country faces discrimination based on their race.
