News Topical, Digital Desk : The Election Commission has begun the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in nine states and three union territories. The matter of the second phase of SIR has also reached the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought separate responses from the Election Commission (EC) on petitions filed by leaders of the DMK, CPI(M), the West Bengal unit of the Congress, and the Trinamool Congress, challenging the SIR process in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Response will be given within two weeks

During the hearing, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi directed the Election Commission (EC) to respond to the matter within two weeks. The Supreme Court also asked the Madras and Calcutta High Courts to stay any action on petitions challenging the SIR of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

SIR is being held in 12 states of the country

It is noteworthy that on October 27, the Election Commission has announced the conduct of the second phase of SIR exercise in 12 states and union territories between November 2025 and February 2026.

The states where the AIR process has begun include the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. It should be noted that elections are scheduled in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal in 2026.

There will be a separate SIR in Assam

Let us tell you that elections are also to be held in Assam in the year 2026, but the Election Commission said that the revision of the electoral roll here will be announced separately.

The second phase of the SIR exercise began on November 4 and will continue until December 4. The EC will release the draft electoral rolls on December 9 and the final electoral rolls will be published on February 7.
