News Topical, Digital Desk : The protests in Kaliachak in Malda district and the hostage taking of judges have raised serious questions about judicial security.
After the Supreme Court expressed concern over the issue, a crucial meeting was held on Friday between the Registrar of the Calcutta High Court and top state officials.
Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyawala and Home Secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh were present at the meeting. The main agenda was the safety of judges who are handling pending cases related to voter lists.
According to sources, the court discussed the need for deployment of central forces for security. However, the state government has assured that it will provide adequate and impenetrable security to all judges.
Following a Supreme Court directive, the Calcutta High Court has constituted 19 tribunals headed by 19 retired judges for the state's 23 districts. These tribunals will address complaints from voters whose names are not included in the electoral rolls.
Following the Malda incident, concerns were raised about the safety of these former judges. The state government has clarified that strict security arrangements will be in place during these virtual hearings, which begin Saturday, to ensure that the judicial process is not disrupted.
