News Topical, Digital Desk : A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the order to put QR codes on the eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route. The petition has sought a stay on the order to put QR codes and said that the purpose behind the QR code order is to reveal the identity of the vendors on the Kanwar Yatra route.

The court may hear this petition on July 15. In the petition filed, the instructions of the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand government have been challenged in which the food vendors on the Kanwar Yatra route have been asked to display QR codes along with their banners in which pilgrims will be able to know the details of the shop owner.

What was said in the petition filed?

The petition has sought a stay on the order to display the QR code. It has been said that the order to install the QR code is against the interim order of the Supreme Court last year which said that vendors cannot be forced to reveal their identity.

The petition states that in order to circumvent the court's order, the authorities have issued new instructions this year, making it mandatory for all eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route to display QR codes that reveal the name and identity of the owners. The purpose behind this instruction is to highlight the religious identity of the vendors on the pilgrimage route.

This argument given in the petition

The petitioner says that the government instructions have no legal basis. Its purpose is to create religious polarization and discrimination. The petition fears that this may provoke mob violence, especially violence against shopkeepers of the minority community. The petition states that the instruction to reveal religious and caste identity under the guise of legal license requirements is a violation of privacy rights.
