News Topical, Digital Desk : The United States will double its tariffs on imported steel and aluminium from Wednesday, according to the White House, releasing an order signed by President Donald Trump, saying the move is the latest in a string of Trump trade moves that bring duties on both metals from 25 percent to 50 percent.

However, tariffs on metal imports from Britain will remain at 25 per cent as the two sides set duty and quotas in line with the terms of their earlier trade agreement.

This is said in the order

The order said that increasing the tariffs imposed earlier would provide further support to these industries and reduce or eliminate the national security threat posed by imports of steel and aluminium items and their derivatives.

President Trump said this

President Trump announced his decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum while addressing workers at a US steel plant in Pennsylvania last week. He said at the time that no one will be able to steal your industry.

It is noteworthy that on May 30, 2025, President Trump has increased the import duty on steel and aluminum from the current 25 percent to 50 percent under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act, 1962.

During his first term (2018), Trump had increased the import duty on steel to 25 percent and on aluminum to 10 percent. In February 2025, the duty rate on aluminum was also increased to 25 percent.

Steel prices are getting very expensive in America

India exported aluminium and steel worth $4.56 billion to the US last year. Of this, iron and steel exports were worth $3.1 billion. The demand for Indian steel was increasing in the US. The reason is that the prices of steel in the US are getting very expensive. The price of steel in the US is $984 per tonne, while in Europe it is $690 per tonne and in China it is $392.

The price of steel in America may reach $1180

GTRI's study says that the price of steel in America can be $1180. In India, this price is currently $500-550 per ton. When America had earlier imposed duty on steel imports, India had sent a notice to the WTO. Now that the Trump administration has once again increased the duty, it remains to be seen whether India takes cognizance of this and sends a notice to the WTO again or not.
