News Topical, Digital Desk : The Karnataka government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the multiple murders, sexual assaults and disappearances of women in Dharmasthala town in Dakshina Kannada district in the last two decades.

Dharmasthala is a pilgrimage town located on the banks of the Netravati river. The order to form the SIT was issued on July 19. It was shared on Sunday. The SIT will be headed by Director General of Police Pranav Mohanty. Other members include Additional Commissioner of Police MN Anuchet, Deputy Commissioner of Police Soumya Latha, Superintendent of Police (Internal Security Department) Jitendra Kumar Dayama.

The investigation report will be submitted to the DGP

A comprehensive investigation report in this case will be submitted to the government through the Director General of Police (DGP) as soon as possible. Karnataka State Women's Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Chaudhary had written a letter in the Dharmasthala case and requested a "comprehensive and impartial investigation" of the case. After this, the state government took the step of forming an SIT.

Hundreds of bodies were buried in the Dharmasthala area

The letter by the State Women's Commission chairperson referred to a statement made by a person in court, which said that “hundreds of bodies are buried in the Dharmasthala area. The commission has also taken note of media reports highlighting human skulls and statements made by the family of the missing medical student.”

The commission has said that these reports show a "disturbing pattern of unusual deaths and disappearances of women and girl students". Such incidents have been happening for more than 20 years. A case has already been registered in this matter under the Indian Penal Code (BNS) at Dharmasthala Police Station.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah posted on Sunday X, The Special Investigation Team will investigate all the criminal cases registered in Dharmasthala police station as well as cases registered or to be registered in other police stations in the state related to this matter and submit a report. A person has filed a statement in the court claiming that hundreds of bodies have been buried.

 

The media has carried reports about statements by the family of a missing medical student. One report also said that human skulls were found in the area. A complaint has been filed with the Dharmasthala police alleging the disposal of several bodies. The complainant is a former sweeper at the Dharmasthala temple. His identity has been kept confidential for security reasons.

The complainant has claimed that he was involved in disposing of several bodies. The guilt-ridden informant has offered to share detailed information about the people involved in disposing of the bodies and the specific locations where the bodies were disposed of.
