News Topical, Digital Desk : After Bihar, the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across the country is expected to begin on Tuesday. The Election Commission has called a meeting on Monday to announce the SIR.
The first phase will also include Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Bengal, where assembly elections are due next year. In addition, the seven or eight other states where SIR will be initiated may also include states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. According to senior Election Commission officials, SIR work will begin in the first phase in those states where elections are scheduled for 2026.
The work will be completed by next March
The voter list correction work will be completed by next March. The next phase of SIR will be announced after March, covering all remaining states, including the hill states. The Commission recently indicated the imminent start of SIR in a meeting with CEOs of all states.
The Chief Electoral Officers of many states have already uploaded the voter lists published since their last SIR to their websites. It should be noted that the Commission will not currently conduct SIRs for those states where local body elections are being held or are imminent, as the election machinery is busy with these tasks.
In such states, the SIR will be conducted in the second and final phase. In Bihar, the SIR of voter lists has already been completed. The final list, containing approximately 74.2 million names, was published on September 30. Voting in Bihar will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with the results declared on November 14.
