News Topical, Digital Desk : Trouble appears to be mounting for former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) announced on Thursday that it will deliver its verdict against the former prime minister on November 17th.
Sheikh Hasina faces charges of murdering hundreds of people during last July's student uprising, and crimes against humanity.
Awami League called for a nationwide shutdown
The ICT order comes at a time when the Bangladesh Awami League has announced a nationwide strike, which has completely disrupted life in many cities across the country, including Dhaka.
Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party has called for a nationwide dawn-to-dusk shutdown today. Security forces, including the army and police, have been deployed at several key locations across the country in anticipation of the shutdown.
The Yunus government imposed several restrictions on the Awami League.
It should be noted that the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Yunus's chief advisor, decided to ban the activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations. Following this, party leaders from various locations issued calls for a shutdown via social media.
Sheikh Hasina's government was toppled by the student movement.
It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina's government was overthrown by a student-led uprising in July 2024. The former Prime Minister arrived in India on August 5, 2024. She is currently in a safe location in India.
After Sheikh Hasina stepped down, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. According to a UN report, approximately 1,400 people may have been killed during the July protests.
