Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of Khaleda Zia. In a tweet on his X handle, PM Modi said, "Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our deepest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May God give her family the strength to bear this loss."
PM Modi said on X, “As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her significant contribution to Bangladesh's development as well as to India-Bangladesh relations will always be remembered. I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace.”
Died at the age of 80 during treatment
Khaleda Zia passed away this morning at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka's Evercare Hospital. Zia was admitted to Dhaka's Evercare Hospital on November 23rd due to a lung infection. The former prime minister had long suffered from several physical ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney problems, and was flown to London earlier this month for advanced medical treatment for her ailments. A large crowd gathered outside the hospital this morning, while Begum Zia's son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman arrived to pay tribute to his late mother. According to a statement from the BNP on Facebook, Zia passed away shortly after Fajr prayers at around 6 a.m. (local time).
