Kolkata: Bowing to the demands of junior doctors protesting against the incident of brutality against a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, the Bengal government finally removed Kolkata Police Commissioner (CP) Vineet Goyal, DC North Abhishek Gupta, Director of Health Services (DHS) and Director of Medical Education (DME) from their posts on Tuesday.

Who is Kolkata's new CP Manoj Verma?

Manoj Verma has been appointed as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner in place of Vineet Goyal. Verma, a 1998 batch IPS officer, was earlier handling the responsibility of ADG (Law and Order) of the state police.

At the same time, 1994 batch IPS Vineet Goyal has been transferred to the post of ADG of STF of Bengal Police. 

Manoj Verma, who has become the new police commissioner of Kolkata, is a 1998 batch officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS). He originally hails from Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan.

55-year-old Verma was earlier handling the responsibility of ADG (Law and Order). Manoj Verma has been the SP of many districts of Bengal.

In 2011, he was the SP of the Maoist-affected West Midnapore district, where he played an important role in eliminating Maoist activities.

He was also awarded the President's Police Medal for commendable service on Independence Day in 2017.

He was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Barrackpore following the post-Lok Sabha election violence in 2019.

He was also awarded the Chief Minister's Police Medal by Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019.

CBI submitted report to HC

The CBI on Tuesday submitted a progress report on its probe into financial irregularities at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Calcutta High Court. After accepting the first progress report on the case, a single bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj directed the central agency to submit another progress report on the case by November 25.

On the other hand, the former principal of the hospital Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal, who were arrested in the case of brutality against the doctor, were sent to three-day CBI custody on Tuesday.
