This time the festival of Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Tuesday 29th July. On this day Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and the serpent deities are worshiped.
On this occasion, we are going to tell you about those famous snakes of the mythological era, who are still worshipped today. Among these, Sheshnag, Vasuki and Takshak have been the most famous snakes. Let us know about them…
Vasuki Nag
Vasuki, who adorns the neck of Devadhidev Mahadev like a necklace, is called the king of snakes. Snakes of this species are considered to be the children of Maharishi Kashyap and Kadru. His wife's name is Shatashipa. It is said that during the churning of the ocean, Nagraj Vasuki was used as a rope.
Sheshnag
Sheshnag's mother's name was Kadru. His mother and brothers together had cheated sage Kashyap's second wife Vinata. Seeing this, he left his mother and brothers and went to do penance on Gandhamadana mountain. Pleased with this, Brahma gave him a boon that his intellect will never deviate from religion.
Brahma had asked Sheshnag to hold the earth on his hood and keep it stable. Lord Vishnu lies on the bed of Sheshnag in Kshirsagar. Sheshnag had taken incarnation on earth in the form of Lord Shri Ram's younger brother Laxman and Shri Krishna's elder brother Balram.
Takshak Nag
Takshak, who lives in the netherworld, is believed to be related to the Mahabharata period. It is said that Takshak had bitten King Parikshit due to the curse of Shringi Rishi. To take revenge for this, Parikshit's son Janamejaya performed the Sarp Yagya to destroy the Naag clan.
But, on the advice of sage Aastik, Janamejaya stopped the snake sacrifice and saved Takshak's life. That day was the fifth day of the month of Shravan. It is said that the serpents had then promised sage Aastik that whoever worships the serpents on Nag Panchami will not be afraid of snake bites.
