News Topical, Digital Desk : The rapid erosion of the Ganga river has taken a horrific form in Jawainiya village of Damodarpur Panchayat under Shahpur block of Bhojpur district. So far, more than 150 houses of ward number four and five of the village have been submerged in the Ganga. Every day the soil of the village is slipping, people's homes are getting submerged in the womb of the Ganga and the dream houses are becoming a story of destruction.
Jawainiya village will become history!
Every day houses are being eroded by the river, people are now forced to leave their village and settle somewhere far away. Looking at the erosion of the Ganga river, it seems that in the coming days Jawainiya village will become just a history. The Ganga river is cutting the village from the north direction, which has now reached the end of the south side of the village. Wherever the Ganga river has reached, only the middle school of the village is left, the whole village is empty.
Relief work is being carried out by the administration. At present, hundreds of people from the village are living in tents built on the embankments. Food, drinking water and plastic sheets have been arranged in the relief camps, but this relief seems insufficient in the rain and sun. There is mourning in the village, from children to the elderly, everyone is helpless. Women are crying, men have locked their houses and taken shelter at relatives' or temporary places.
Due to the continuous erosion of the Ganges, many historical and religious places of the village have also been submerged in the river. Ghuruhu Brahma Baba's temple, Vrikshdand Brahma Baba's temple, Govardhan temple and Maa Kali temple are now only memories. Even the water tank of the Nal-Jal Yojana and huge trees have also fallen prey to erosion.
Although the water level of Ganga has now come down a little from the red danger mark, the erosion has not stopped. Relief material is being delivered by the administration, the villagers say that the government should focus on long-term solutions and not just immediate relief. Permanent embankments, river route regulation and concrete anti-erosion measures are needed the most today. Also, there is a demand to provide not only material but also emotional and social support to the displaced families.
The atmosphere of the village is very sad. People who have lost their homes, fields and dreams in the Ganges are crying bitterly. Women and children are wandering around the embankment for their safety. Everyone has the same question in their mind - "Where to go now? What to do? How will life start again?"
People intensified the demand for a permanent solution
The people of Jawainia village are demanding a permanent solution from the government. They say that every year such devastation is ruining their lives. If concrete steps are not taken in time, the situation may become more horrific in the coming days.
The village head representative said that about 70 villages have been merged in the Ganges. About 2500 people live in Jawaniya village, including ward number four and five of Damodarpur Panchayat. The villagers have demanded from the government that we do not want money, we should be given houses built somewhere, we want this compensation. The work of the Thokar Dam that was being built in the village was not done properly, due to which today the result is that the village has been merged. We had opposed the Thokar Dam that was being built, saying that it was not being built properly. To save the part of the village that is left, boulder pitching should be done and the Thokar Bandh should be built properly.
Video of a villager crying goes viral
A video of village resident Jakhar Chaudhary also went viral on social media, in which his house merged in the Ganga in front of his eyes, after which he was crying a lot. He told that my four generations were living in this village. I had built a house on more than one and a half kattha of land by investing 16 lakh rupees. With the money earned from hard work year after year, he built an 11 room house, which has now merged in the Ganga. Right now he lives on the dam with his entire family. He demands from the government that the house should be built as it was earlier. According to him, at least 200 houses have merged in the Ganga.
The strong waves in the Ganges due to the storm engulfed 11 houses of Jawainiya village of Shahpur last Friday. The district administration is engaged on a war footing in relief and rescue work among the victims. Officers and engineers of the district administration and Buxar flood control division are camping.
