
News Topical, Digital Desk : A 22-year-old youth living in Kurla area of Mumbai borrowed money from people to play the online game Aviator, but lost all the money in the game. When the pressure of the lenders increased on the youth who was in heavy debt, he took the path of crime. To get rid of the debt, he along with his friend snatched the chain from a 74-year-old woman.
Senior Police Inspector of Matunga Police, Rajendra Pawar, said that around 8 pm on Sunday evening, the 74-year-old woman was returning to her home after worshipping at the Jain temple.
At the same time, a KTM bike carrying two young men came at a high speed near the Shishuvan school. The bike was being driven by Mohit Shetty (22) and his friend Rohit Gaur (19) was sitting behind him.
Pawar further said that Rohit snatched a gold chain weighing one tola from the woman's neck while walking and quickly fled. In this incident, Rohit's nails touched the woman's neck, due to which she got injured.
Police arrested through CCTV footage
As soon as the information about this incident was received, the police swung into action. Through investigation of CCTV footage installed around the spot and technical analysis, the police identified both the accused and arrested them from Kurla area within a few hours.
Pawar said that during interrogation, Mohit Shetty told the police that he had a debt of Rs 85,000. He works as a house boy in a private company located in Vashi area of Navi Mumbai. Mohit admitted that he was addicted to playing an online game called Aviator and for the same he had borrowed money from his acquaintances.
When the lenders pressured him to return the money, Mohit got stressed and planned chain snatching. His childhood friend Rohit Gaur helped him in this crime. Both of them are from the same locality and know each other for a long time.
Pawar said that this incident has been taken as a warning and the youth should avoid getting caught in the trap of online games, their families have been advised to do so. Officials say that due to debt and pressure at a young age, many youth are taking the wrong path, which is a matter of serious concern for the society.
