
News Topical, Digital Desk : This year, August proved to be the rainiest month in the country's capital Delhi. 60 percent of the normal rainfall has already occurred in the first 26 days. The rain continued in Delhi on Tuesday (August 26) as well. This led to waterlogging and traffic jams in many parts. According to the data of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the normal monthly average rainfall in August is 200.8 mm, while so far this month, 321.4 mm rainfall has been recorded in the city, which is about 60 percent more than normal.
How much rain fell in August last year?
Last year, Delhi received a total of 390.3 mm of rain in the month of August, which was 67 percent more than the long-term average. The highest rainfall in the month of August last year in Delhi was recorded on 30 August. According to the data, the city recorded three times more rainfall than normal in June (243.3 mm) and almost normal rainfall in July (203.7 mm).
Monsoon period from 1 June to 30 December
So far this month, it has rained for 12 days and this number may increase further. Because the Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the coming days. Officials said that the seasonal average rainfall during monsoon in Delhi has already happened before time. The monsoon season lasts from June 1 to September 30.
Monsoon arrived in Delhi at the end of June
The monsoon arrived in Delhi in late June and since then it has received over 700 mm of rain, bringing it close to the annual rainfall of 774.4 mm. According to the IMD, rainfall up to 15.5 mm in a 24-hour period is classified as 'light', rainfall between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm is 'moderate', rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is 'heavy' and rainfall above 115.5 mm is 'very heavy'.
According to the data of the Meteorological Department, between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Tuesday, 8 mm of rain was recorded at Palam in the city, 10.4 mm at the Ridge, 5.1 mm at Ayanagar and 1.6 mm at the weather station in Safdarjung.
Earlier in the day, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 68.1 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am. According to the Regional Meteorological Center, during the same period, 129.5 mm of rain was recorded at the Ridge, 71.8 mm at Lodhi Road, 45.5 mm at Pragati Maidan and 37.5 mm at Pusa.
Where is the traffic jam after the rain?
Heavy traffic jams were reported on the Delhi-Jaipur highway, Madhuban Chowk, Peeragarhi Road and Shadipur after the rain. Waterlogging was also seen on Old Rohtak Road, AIIMS crossing, ITO area and Mehrauli-Badarpur road.
What was the temperature recorded in Delhi?
The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 31.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature was 23.9 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees below normal.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) in the city was recorded at 55, which falls in the 'satisfactory' category. According to the standards, AQI between zero to 50 is considered 'good', between 51 to 100 'satisfactory', between 101 to 200 'moderate', between 201 to 300 'bad', between 301 to 400 'very bad' and between 401 to 500 'severe'.
