News Topical, Digital Desk : Dubai has long been a safe haven for expatriates and tourists, but Iran's strikes in the Middle East in response to US and Israeli attacks have changed that outlook.
According to NDTV, the charm of the UAE's most populous city is now overshadowed by smoke and the sound of explosions. Drones are targeting the city, bringing Dubai to a grinding halt. Amidst all this, the conflict is making life extremely difficult for many families. Flight disruptions, skyrocketing prices, and regional uncertainty are creating a humanitarian crisis amid the geopolitical crisis.
An Indian is pleading for help
In fact, Tilakkumar Jalathu Anirutharaja and his wife Shamini Ramesh moved from Tamil Nadu to Dubai eight years ago for a better life. Today, Tilakkumar is struggling to save his mother, who has been in the ICU for the past 40 days.
She had gone to Dubai to meet Tilak. During this time, she suddenly developed a serious bacterial infection. She has been on ventilator support ever since. Doctors say she will remain on it for another two months. Currently, the hospital bill has risen significantly, and there is no way to pay it.
Hospital bill Rs 3 lakh per day
The financial burden is enormous. The hospital bill is ₹300,000 per day, not including scans or specialized treatments. The total bill to date has reached ₹1.25 crore and is rising daily. Tilak says it's impossible for a working person to pay such a high bill.
Flight cancellations due to war
Desperate, Tilak opted for medical repatriation to India, where long-term treatment is more affordable. On March 4, doctors cleared him to travel on a commercial medical escort flight, which would have cost ₹7 lakh. However, the flight was canceled due to the escalating war.
Now their only option is a private air ambulance. Due to the conflict, its cost has increased nearly sevenfold to 5 million rupees. They will have to pay the bill upon discharge and are hoping for a discount from the hospital. The couple is also seeking help from charities in Dubai.
