News Topical, Digital Desk : The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has made a significant change to reduce delays in the approval process for imported food items. Under this, FSSAI has allowed simultaneous inspection and testing of imported food items.
Additionally, FSSAI has continued safety inspections. This is expected to significantly reduce the time required for approvals. Instead of waiting for payment at each stage, simultaneous inspection and testing will allow imported food items to reach the public faster and in better condition.
Process made easy
FSSAI has also established that final approval, including NOC, will only be granted after all fees have been paid. Previously, this process was quite lengthy. After document verification, importers had to pay a fee before testing. Then, they had to pay another fee before sending the sample to the lab.
During this time, if payment was delayed for any reason, the entire process would slow down and consignments would be stuck at ports. Under the new rules, once the documentation is fully verified, samples can be taken immediately after the initial test, without waiting for payment.
The new rules will also benefit consumers. Faster clearances will reduce the time perishable foods like fruits, dairy, and processed products spend at ports, reducing the risk of spoilage. This is also expected to reduce logistics delays, which will help stabilize market prices.
