News Topical, Digital Desk : The Indian Army and Air Force on Monday saluted the indomitable courage, unwavering commitment and supreme sacrifice of India's valiant soldiers who defend the world's highest battlefield.
On the completion of 42 years of Operation Meghdoot, both armies paid tribute to a legacy defined by valour, endurance and operational excellence in some of the toughest terrain and weather conditions on earth.
Why is Siachen Day celebrated on 13th April?
April 13 is celebrated as Siachen Day as it was on this day in 1984 that Operation Meghdoot was launched, when the Indian Army and Air Force advanced to the Siachen Glacier to secure the heights dominating the northern Ladakh region.
What did the army say?
"On this Siachen Day, the Indian Air Force salutes the indomitable courage, unwavering commitment and supreme sacrifice of the valiant warriors who defend the world's highest battlefield. From strategic airlift and logistics support, to casualty evacuation in high-altitude conditions, the IAF continues to maintain operational readiness at Siachen," the Air Force said.
Meanwhile, the Army's Northern Command said, “On the occasion of Siachen Day, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander NC, and all the brave men of Northern Command pay tribute to the unwavering courage and commitment of those who steadfastly defend the icy heights. We also remember and pay tribute to the brave souls who laid down their lives on the world's highest battlefield.”
