When Asha Bhosle cried after listening to her own song, the studio fell silent; the story of that Rekha song is interesting.

Asha Bhosle was one of those singers who possessed the talent to sing every kind of song. Asha Bhosle, who has earned a Guinness Book of Records for singing 12,000 songs, wasn't even aware of her talent. Once, she had to sing a song in a different way. At first, she thought she wouldn't be able to do it, but when she heard her own rendition, she couldn't believe it would be so good.

Hit song sung in Rekha's film

This story dates back five decades. Asha Bhosle sang several songs in Rekha 's cult film, but one song was particularly difficult for her, as she had to sing not as Asha but as the character in the film, something she had never done before. 

This is the story of the cult film Umrao Jaan, directed by Muzaffar Ali. The film's music was composed by renowned composer Khayyam. When the song "In Aankhon Ki Masti Mein" (featuring Rekha) came to him, Khayyam's wife Jagjit Kaur said that only Asha Bhosle could sing it.

Asha Bhosle readily agreed to sing.

At that time, Asha Bhosle was quite busy. She would sing three songs a day. But when Khayyam approached her with the song, he had already told her that she would have to work very hard on "In Aankhon Ki Masti Mein," as it was a bit difficult. Asha immediately agreed, simply asking for a few days for rehearsals. 

The composer did not want Asha Bhosle's voice. 

But Khayyam had clearly told Asha Bhosle that he wanted Umrao Jaan (Rekha's character), not Asha Ji. She was surprised and asked, "How?" Khayyam then sang and explained what kind of voice he wanted. Asha Ji smiled and said, "Then postpone the song and need eight more days for rehearsal."

Asha Bhosle was unable to sing the song

Then came the recording time. Khayyam had recorded the song in his own voice, which was at a very low decibel. Asha always sang in a louder voice. When Asha Bhosle heard the song during the recording, she was astonished. She called Khayyam's wife, Jagjit, and told her that she couldn't sing with that pitch.

Then Asha Bhosle told Khayyam that he had added a different tone to the song. It wasn't hers. He then explained that he wanted Umrao Jaan. Asha replied, "If I can't sing, how can Umrao Jaan sing?" Khayyam then came up with a solution: she should sing in both Umrao Jaan's voice and her own, and he would incorporate whatever sounded good into the song.

Asha Bhosle made the musician swear on his son

Asha Bhosle immediately said that she should swear on her son that this would happen. Then Khayyam also made her swear that she would sing the song 100% exactly as told to him. Khayyam sahab further said, "When she sang the song in the same voice of the first note and then the alaap came. The song was about five and a half minutes long. As soon as the song ended and Asha ji heard it, she closed her eyes. There was silence for a minute or two."

Khayyam Sahib had said that she was overcome with emotion upon hearing her own song. She couldn't believe she had sung it. She said, "I've never heard my voice like this, nor have I ever sung like this." Khayyam Sahib shared this anecdote in an interview with Lehren.
