News Topical, Digital Desk : The Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic written by the sage Valmiki, contains many astonishing incidents. Today, we'll tell you about one such incident, which few people know about. In the Uttarakanda of the Ramayana, Lord Rama was forced to inflict a terrible punishment on his brother Lakshman. Let's learn more about it.

Yamraj placed this condition

According to the story told in the Uttarakanda of the Ramayana, after killing Ravana and returning from exile, Ram became the king of Ayodhya and began to rule. One day, Yama, the god of death, disguised himself as a sage and arrived in Ayodhya to meet with Shri Ram. He wanted to speak with him privately. He also stipulated that anyone who interrupted their conversation would be executed. Lord Ram then informed Lakshman of Yama's condition and asked him to guard the gate.

Laxman took this step out of compulsion

Meanwhile, Sage Durvasa, known for his extreme anger and curses, arrived. He wanted to meet Lord Rama immediately. Lakshmana tried to dissuade him and persuade him, but he refused. Upon Lakshmana's intervention, Sage Durvasa became furious and declared, “If you don't let me meet Lord Rama, I will burn the entire city of Ayodhya to ashes with my curse.”

Jal Samadhi gave this advice

After listening to Sage Durvasa, Lakshmana had no choice but to enter the room where Yamaraj and Shri Ram were having a secret conversation. Yamaraja was in his true form and disappeared as soon as Lakshmana entered the room. True to his word, Rama had to sentence Lakshmana to death. He sought help from Sage Vashishtha. Sage Vashishtha advised him to abandon Lakshmana and send him out of the kingdom, which would be tantamount to a death sentence for him.

On the advice of Guru Vashishtha, Shri Ram "abandoned" Lakshman. Lakshman accepted this and took Samadhi in the Saryu River. This incident also proves Lord Shri Ram's status as the "Maryada Purushottam." For the sake of upholding his word and dignity, Lord Shri Ram gave his brother Lakshman a punishment equivalent to death.
