News Topical, Digital Desk : Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has hit back at the central government's proposed delimitation process. She said that a census should be conducted before delimitation, and it should be politically neutral. She also demanded an OBC sub-quota for women, emphasizing that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had raised this demand when the "Nari Vandan Act" was passed in 2023.

Small states should not be harmed

Meanwhile, in a media article, Sonia Gandhi said, "It seems that a formula is being suggested for delimitation. However, as before, the census must be completed before any delimitation. Any delimitation that increases the number of Lok Sabha seats should be fair, not just political. States that have taken the lead in family planning, and smaller states, should not be disadvantaged in any way."

The real issue is delimitation.

He further stated, "The issue here is not about reservation for women; that has already been decided. The real issue is delimitation, which, based on unofficial information, is extremely dangerous and an attack on the Constitution itself. Therefore, the government should not hastily pass important amendments like delimitation." He emphasized that the provision for reservation for women in local bodies and panchayats was implemented only after five years of discussions.

Government accused of polishing its image

He suggested that the government could call an all-party meeting after April 29, and the issue could be raised in the monsoon session of Parliament in July. He accused the Modi government of trying to bolster its image during difficult times, and called the entire process undemocratic. Meanwhile, the Congress on Monday issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs, directing them to be present in the House compulsorily during the special session.
