Amazing performance in 'Manjali Didi'

This child is none other than Sachin Pilgaonkar. He played the role of Meena Kumari's adopted younger brother Kishan in the 1967 film Manjhali Didi. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, this film had stars like Dharmendra, Lalita Pawar and Sarika, but Sachin impressed everyone with his acting. The special thing is that Sachin got the National Film Award for this film, which was a big achievement for a child artist at that time.

 

Meena Kumari's recommendation

Interestingly, director Hrishikesh Mukherjee did not want to cast Sachin at first. But Meena Kumari recommended him, after which Sachin auditioned and was selected in the very first shot. On the set, Meena Kumari loved Sachin like her younger brother and also helped him learn Urdu. This film made Sachin famous overnight.

Sachin played the role of Ahmed in the iconic 1975 film Sholay. His small role left a deep impression amidst stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and Amjad Khan. Ahmed's death scene was emotional for the audience. Sachin told that he and Amjad Khan also worked as assistant directors in some action sequences of Sholay.

 

A wonderful career journey

Sachin worked in films like Nadiya Ke Paar, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Geet Gaata Chal and Satta Pe Satta. He acted in about 65 films as a child artist and later earned fame as a hero, director and producer. His wife Supriya Pilgaonkar and daughter Shriya Pilgaonkar are also part of the industry. Even today Sachin is active in cinema and TV.
