News Topical, Digital Desk : According to the World Health Organization (WHO), less than 10% of our total calories should come from sugar. If you want to be even healthier, this amount should be less than 5%. This simply means that you should not eat more than 25 grams (about 5 teaspoons) of sugar in a day.

One jalebi or soda is enough!

You may be surprised to read this, but just by drinking a can of soda or eating a jalebi, you can easily cross this limit of 25 grams of sugar. Think about how many other things we eat throughout the day that contain hidden sugar. Therefore, the doctor says that we should be very careful about 'added sugar' in our diet.

Natural Sugar vs. Added Sugar

A question may arise in your mind whether the natural sugar present in fruits and vegetables is equally harmful? The answer is - no, it is not! This advice of WHO   does not apply to the sugar found naturally in fruits and vegetables .

Sugars from fruits, such as glucose and fructose, come with fibre and other nutrients that are beneficial for our body. Honey also contains  natural sugar  and it is okay to consume it in limited quantities.

We need to pay most attention to things that contain added sugar, such as:

  • Cold Drinks
  • Packaged juice
  • Cookies and Biscuits
  • Cakes and pastries
  • Chocolate
  • Desserts
  • and even in some sauces and breads.

How to identify hidden sugar?

To reduce your sugar intake, always read the labels on packaged items. Look for names like "sugar," "glucose," "fructose," "sucrose," "corn syrup" on the ingredient list, as these are all different forms of sugar.
