News Topical, Digital Desk : The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has started vacating its North Block headquarters in Raisina Hills and is now shifting to CCS-3, a newly constructed building located on Kartavya Path near India Gate. The shifting is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's ambitious Central Vista project, which aims to redesign the heart of the capital.
According to sources, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, some joint secretaries and additional secretary level officers along with their staff have already shifted to the CCS-3 building. The remaining officers and staff will also complete the process in the next few days. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's office has not yet shifted, but the process is going on in this regard as well. The Home Ministry has been allotted around 350 rooms in the new building.
It has been the headquarters of the Home Ministry for 90 years
North Block, a magnificent building made of red sandstone, has been the headquarters of the Ministry of Home Affairs for nearly 90 years. Designed by British architect Herbert Baker, the building, along with South Block and the Parliament House and a number of bungalows, was part of the overall plan for New Delhi designed by Edwin Lutyens.
Plan to convert empty buildings into a huge museum
Once the new buildings under the Central Vista project are ready, the identical buildings that house the Prime Minister's Office and key offices like the ministries of home, finance, defence and external affairs - North Block and South Block - will be completely vacant. The government plans to convert these vacant buildings into a huge museum called 'Yuge Yugin Bharat'. It will be one of the largest museums in the world with an area of 1.55 lakh square metres and 950 rooms.
Proposal for Central Secretariat Complex
As part of the Central Vista project, the Centre had proposed a Central Secretariat complex of 10 office buildings and a convention centre on Kartavya Path to accommodate all the ministries. The first three of these office buildings have been constructed.
According to the government order, the CCS-3 building will house the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser and the Home Ministry, besides the offices of the Ministries of External Affairs, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Rural Development and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
