Women were previously barred from the infantry, but now these doors may open to them. According to Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, if society accepts this, the Army may consider it.

General Upendra Dwivedi says the Army is focused on gender equality. He said, "If the standards and capabilities are the same, and society in India accepts it, this could be possible in the near future."

What did the Army Chief say?

General Upendra Dwivedi further stated that equality is essential, but sometimes it is difficult to implement due to medical and operational challenges. The number of women recruited will be determined based on their performance.

Talking about the number of women in the Army, the Army Chief said, "We have 60 Army cadets under the NDA, every year we aim to recruit 20 cadets. At the same time, we recruit 120 cadets every year in the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai and Gaya."

8000 women officers in the army

The Army Chief stated that the target is to increase the recruitment of women in the ORS by 12 percent by 2032. Currently, the total number of female officers is 8,000. Therefore, if women are recruited into the ORS, 110 positions could be filled.
