News Topical, Digital Desk : Schools in Maharashtra that do not make Marathi language compulsory could face a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh and even have their accreditation revoked.
The School Education Department on Friday, through a Government Resolution (GR), strictly enforced compulsory teaching of Marathi language in all schools after concerns were raised that many schools, especially those affiliated to central boards, were not following the rule.
The GR warns of stringent penalties, including a fine of up to ₹1 lakh, for violations. The GR states that Marathi is a compulsory subject in all schools from Classes 1 to 10 from 2020-21 under the Maharashtra Compulsory Marathi Language Teaching Act, 2020.
This applies to all institutions, regardless of the board or medium they operate under. The department has designated divisional deputy education directors as competent authorities to oversee the implementation of this rule.
Schools will be inspected within two months of the start of the academic year to ensure Marathi is being taught. If violations are found, schools will be served notices and asked to respond within 15 days.
