This Purana has been written by Maharishi Ved Vyas, in which there is a dialogue between Lord Vishnu and the bird king Garuda.

Garuda Purana tells what the family should do and what they should not do after death. How does the soul travel and who gets heaven and who goes to hell. On what basis do creatures get rebirth. It is written in this Purana that why the last rites should not be performed after sunset after death. Let us know why this happens…

the gates of heaven are closed

According to Garuda Purana, the dead body should not be cremated after sunset. It is said that by doing so the soul of the person does not get peace. Also, it is believed that the gates of heaven are closed after sunset. Because of this the soul is unable to reach its destination.

The gates of hell open after sunset. In such a situation, if the deceased is cremated at night, then the soul has to suffer the pain of hell. In the next birth, such a person may have a defect in any of his body parts. Therefore, whenever a person dies at night, his last rites are not performed at night.

Who can perform cremation?

According to Garuda Purana, the body of the deceased should be kept on the ground until sunrise. In the morning, the last rites should be performed with proper rituals. This ritual can be performed only by the father, son, brother, grandson or any male member of the family.

Garuda Purana states that funeral rites are a part of the lineage tradition. Therefore, only those people who have been associated with the lineage throughout their lives have been given the right to perform these rites.
