When is Janmashtami after Rakshabandhan?
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. On the dark night of Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada month, Shri Krishna was born as the eighth child of Vasudev and Devaki. This year Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on 16 August 2025.
The result of Janmashtami Puja
According to the Puranas, by worshipping Lord Krishna on this day, people get wealth, happiness and prosperity. In the Dwapar era, it was because of Shri Krishna that demons like Kansa, Jarasandha, Kalayavan were killed. God helped the Pandavas and destroyed the unrighteous Kaurava dynasty. In such a situation, worshipping Kanha is considered infallible for getting children and victory over enemies.
Why is Kanha's birthday celebrated at night?
At the time when Kanha was born, it was the eighth quarter of Bhado Krishna Ashtami, Rohini Nakshatra and the moon was in Taurus. In Dwapar Yuga, this auspicious time was 12 midnight, hence there is a tradition of celebrating Janmashtami at night every year.
Why is fasting observed on Janmashtami?
There is a tradition of fasting the whole day on Janmashtami so that the devotees can do puja with full concentration. When we remain without food, we do not feel lazy and our mind does not wander in useless things and we are able to worship God with full devotion. Along with this, fasting also gives rest to our digestive system.
How is Janmashtami celebrated in Mathura-Vrindavan
Janmashtami is celebrated with great pomp in Mathura, the birthplace and childhood home of Krishna, and Vrindavan, the playground of Kanha. Devotees take out processions, sing bhajans and enact scenes from his life. Temples are decorated and Abhishek Puja is performed at midnight. Mangala Aarti, a one-time annual ritual, is performed on this day.
