News Topical, Digital Desk : The trailer for director Raghav Dar's original documentary series, "Lawrence of Punjab," explores how criminal identities are formed. The upcoming show uses the journey of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi as a key case study on the intersection of politics, music, ideology, and media propaganda.

What's in the trailer?

This series tells the story of the formation of a criminal identity through the lens of culture, systems, and individuals. From student politics and music to ideology and media propaganda, it interweaves these elements to show how desire, power, and public perception combine to create a new-age digital syndicate. With Bishnoi as the primary case study, the story doesn't remain confined to one individual, but expands its scope to examine the larger cultural and social environment, with a particular focus on its consequences.

Director Raghav Dar said, “Lawrence of Punjab was always conceived as more than a crime story. Our aim was to understand the 'why' behind the formation of such identities. That is, the environment, the influences and the systems that shape them.”

Who is Lawrence Bishnoi?

Lawrence Bishnoi is a notorious Indian gangster who rose from student politics in Chandigarh to become a prominent figure in organized crime in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Born in 1992 in the Firozpur district of Punjab, he is the leader of the Bishnoi gang.

The gang is known for its involvement in extortion, smuggling, and violent crimes, and its network spans several states. In 2018, it came to national attention after openly threatening actor Salman Khan over the blackbuck poaching case. Since then, it has been accused of involvement in several murders, kidnappings, and extortion cases; it often operates its criminal network from inside prison.

'Lawrence of Punjab' premieres on April 27, only on Hindi ZEE5.
