News Topical, Digital Desk : Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has expressed displeasure over an AI-generated deepfake video in which he appears to praise Pakistan's diplomatic stance on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. In his statement, Tharoor called the video completely fabricated and misleading to the public.

A statement from Shashi Tharoor's office said, "A fake, AI-generated deepfake video of Dr. Shashi Tharoor is circulating online, showing him falsely praising Pakistan in connection with a cricket match. This video is completely fabricated and is intended to mislead the public."

Tharoor's office denies the video

The statement appealed to citizens, media platforms, and relevant authorities to refrain from amplifying unverified material and demanded the immediate removal of such defamatory content.

Shashi Tharoor's office said, "We strongly condemn the circulation of this misinformation and appeal to all citizens, media platforms and relevant authorities to exercise utmost caution, not amplify unverified content, and take immediate steps to report and remove this defamatory content."

I don't like the politicisation of sports: Tharoor

Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had said that he does not like the politicisation of sports and is happy that cricket will go ahead with the India-Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup.

Shashi Tharoor's comments came after Pakistan backtracked on its decision to boycott a group-stage World Cup match against arch-rival India.

India-Pakistan match on February 15

The Pakistan government had directed its national cricket team to take the field on February 15 for their scheduled match against defending champions India in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
