Changed statement as soon as he went to court
A young Briton broke down in a dramatic change of plea in court on Wednesday after months of pleading not guilty and admitting he deliberately drove his car into crowds at Liverpool's Premier League victory parade, injuring several people.
declared himself guilty
The 54-year-old man sensationally changed his statement during a court hearing as prosecutors prepared to present evidence against him. The accused, Paul Doyle, dressed in a suit and glasses, wept and stared at the floor, his voice faltering as he said "guilty" every time.
Judge Andrew Menary said he would pronounce sentence over two days, beginning December 15. He told Doyle to prepare for "some period of custodial sentence." The maximum penalty for the most serious crimes is life imprisonment. Doyle, a father of three who has been in custody since his arrest, will remain in prison until sentencing.
The car had driven into the crowd
It's worth noting that on May 26, during Liverpool Football Club's Premier League victory parade, a large number of supporters gathered in Liverpool's city center. Roads were closed for the parade. During this time, Doyle "deliberately used his vehicle as a weapon and drove into the crowd." According to Merseyside Police, he injured 134 people, including infants, other children, and adults.
