Every year Ambubachi fair is organized in this temple, in which a huge crowd of devotees gather to participate. Let's know about this fair.

Legend associated with the temple

According to the legend, once when King Daksha organized a yagya, he did not invite his daughter Mata Sati and Lord Shiva. Despite Shiva's persuasion, Mata Sati did not listen and went to her father's place for the yagya. When she saw that her father was insulting Shiva, she could not tolerate this insult and sacrificed her body in the fire pit.

When Shiv Ji came to know about this, he picked up the body of Mata Sati and started roaming around the world. This created chaos in the whole world. Then Lord Vishnu cut the body of Mata Sati into many pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra and counted them at various places on earth. Wherever the body parts of Mata Sati fell, Shakti Peeths are established there today. It is said that the vagina of Mata Sati fell in Kamagiri of Guwahati, Assam, at the place where Kamakhya Devi temple is built today.

Beliefs related to the fair

This year Ambubachi fair is going to be organized from 22 June, which will continue till 26 June 2025. This fair is considered a symbol of the annual menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya. This fair is also very important for the Tantrikas. Lakhs of devotees from the country and abroad reach here. According to religious beliefs, this is the time when the mother menstruates.

This time is considered to be the resting time of the Goddess and during this time the doors of the sanctum sanctorum of Kamakhya Devi temple are closed. During this period, for 3 days, there is no worship, no darshan. On the fourth day, Shakti is awakened and the Goddess is given a 'shuddhi snan'. On this day the doors of the temple are opened for devotees.

The Prasad available in this temple is also very special. It is believed that during this period a white cloth is kept near the goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. After the goddess menstruates, this cloth turns red, which is given to the devotees as Prasad. It is believed that this cloth given as Prasad blesses the devotees with happiness and prosperity.
