No one is above the law in this country, the Supreme Court said on Thursday in a dispute between a businessman and his estranged wife (an IPS officer). The businessman's lawyer feared that he would have to suffer throughout his life because his estranged wife is an IPS officer.

On this, the bench of Justice BR Gavai, Augustine George Masih and K Vinod Chandran said that both the parties should resolve their dispute in the interest of justice.

We're here to protect your back

"She is an IPS officer. You are a businessman. You should settle it instead of wasting your time in court. If there is any harassment, we are here to protect you," the bench told the lawyer. The lawyer said his client and his father are in jail in the cases filed by the woman.

You are interested in taking the job

The lawyer alleged that the estranged wife has given a false statement that no FIR is registered against her. The truth is that on the day she filled the form for joining the police service, two FIRs were registered against her. To this, the bench said that you are more interested in ensuring that she loses her job.

not interested in compromise

The lawyer said that if he has made any wrong declaration in his form then the Home Ministry should take action. To this the bench said that you are not interested in saving your life. You are interested in ensuring that his career is ruined. Ultimately in the process of ruining his life you will ruin your life too. It is very clear that this person is not interested in a settlement.

Hearing adjourned for two weeks

The bench said that you are not interested in living your life happily. You are only interested in ruining someone else's life. The bench said that if the parties are unwilling then it cannot force them to settle the disputes and suggested that they settle the disputes.

The lawyers appearing for both the sides said that both the sides will sit together and try to find an amicable solution to the disputes. After this, the bench adjourned the hearing for two weeks later.
