A Pakistani court has given a big blow to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in a land corruption case. This case is related to the corruption of 190 million pounds of Al-Qadir Trust. Imran's wife Bushra Bibi has also been sentenced to 7 years.
This entire controversy is related to Al Qadir Trust University. Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and his close aides Zulfiqar Bukhari and Babar Awan formed the Al-Qadir Project Trust, which aimed to establish Al-Qadir University to provide 'quality education' in Sohawa tehsil of Jhelum district of Punjab.
What is Al-Qadir Trust case?
- According to Dawn's report, the case is related to land and money transactions related to Bahria Town, in which Imran Khan is accused of corruption. This happened during Imran Khan's tenure as PM.
- Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were accused of acquiring billions of rupees and hundreds of kanals of land from Bahria Town Limited. The court found these allegations true and convicted Imran and Bushra.
- The reference filed by NAB (National Accountability Bureau) alleged that Imran, who is currently in jail, played a key role in the illegal transfer of funds belonging to the State of Pakistan into the account meant for payment of land in Bahria Town, Karachi.
- It was also claimed that despite being given several opportunities to justify and provide the information, the accused deliberately, with malafide intention, refused to provide the information under one pretext or the other.
- Property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain and his sons Ahmed Ali Riaz, Mirza Shahzad Akbar and Zulfi Bukhari are also among the suspects in this context, but instead of joining the investigation and subsequent court proceedings, they absconded and were later declared proclaimed offenders (PO).
How did it start?
It all started five years ago when the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency (NCA) agreed to a $190 million settlement with the family of property tycoon Malik Riaz.
According to a statement issued by the NCA, the agreement includes a UK property - 1 Hyde Park Place, London, W2 2LH - valued at around ₹50 million and all the funds landed in the frozen accounts of Malik Riaz.
The scam came to light after Pakistan media reported that Rs 180 million was received by the trust while the records showed expenditure of around Rs 8.52 million.
Understand the whole case from 2019
- Let us tell you that on 26 December 2019, Imran Khan registered a trust for the Al Qadir University project. Pakistan's richest man Malik Riaz later became the donor of the land for it.
- After registration of the trust deed, Bahria Town bought 458 kanal of land in Sohawa, Jhelum and transferred the land in the name of Zulfi B. As per the stamp papers, the price of the land was fixed at Rs 243 crore.
- Zulfi B transferred the land to the name of the trust.
- Whereas from 2021, the trust received a donation of Rs 180.
- Imran Khan was first arrested in connection with the case on May 9, 2023, a development that sparked nationwide protests and riots.
He was later released after the Supreme Court declared the arrest illegal. In November 2023, Imran, who was already imprisoned in Adiala Jail in the Sifar case, was arrested again by the National Accountability Bureau in the Al-Qadir Trust case. He has been in jail since then.
