Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday, without naming Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, said that her remarks on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill were unfortunate and not in accordance with parliamentary decorum. Rajya Sabha member Sonia Gandhi had alleged that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed forcibly. This bill is a blatant attack on the Constitution. After Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju mentioned Sonia's remarks on the last day of the Budget session, Birla also said that it is not appropriate for a senior member to question the proceedings of the Lok Sabha.

This bill is a blatant attack on the Constitution- Sonia Gandhi

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday accused the government of arbitrarily passing the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, claiming that the bill is a blatant attack on the Constitution and is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) deliberate strategy to keep society in a state of permanent polarisation.

Sonia Gandhi surrounded the government on many other issues

In the CPP meeting held in the Parliament House complex, he had launched a scathing attack on the government and Prime Minister Modi on the 'One Nation, One Election' bill, the functioning of the Election Commission, the political situation in India's neighboring countries, deadlock in Parliament, opposition leaders 'not being allowed to speak' and many other issues.

There was a record-breaking discussion on this bill in the House- Rijiju

Union Minister Rijiju said in the Lok Sabha, 'ESMA Act, 1981 was discussed for 16 hours 51 minutes. Breaking this record, the Wakf (Amendment) Bill was discussed for 17 hours and 2 minutes in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. This is historic. The longest discussion of this kind took place.' Without naming Sonia Gandhi, he said, 'Many MPs told me that a member of the other house alleged that the bill was passed by 'bulldozing' without discussion. The bill was passed by following the rules and procedures. Instead of praising it, it was said that the bill was passed by 'bulldozing'.

There was division of votes on the bill three times

Rijiju urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to give a ruling on this. Birla said, 'The Parliamentary Affairs Minister informed that a senior Congress member, who has been a member of this House and is now a member of the other House, has given a statement in the Parliament premises that the Wakf (Amendment) Bill was passed forcefully. The Wakf Amendment Bill was discussed by the House for 13 hours and 53 minutes. In which all the members expressed their views. There was division of votes on this bill thrice.'

This is not in accordance with parliamentary decorum- Birla

He said that hence this bill was passed as per the rules of the House. Birla said that it is very unfortunate that a senior member raised questions on the proceedings of the House. He also said that this is not proper and is not in accordance with parliamentary decorum. Congress members also created a ruckus in the House, urging to put forth their point. A few minutes later, Birla adjourned the House meeting indefinitely.
