According to historians, the Ganpati temple in Pune was built by Dagdu Seth Halwai. It is said that Dagdu Seth was a sweets merchant. Due to business, Dagdu Seth came and settled in Pune. With time, Dagdu Seth became a big businessman. During this time, Dagdu Seth's son died due to plague disease. Dagdu Seth had only one son. Dagdu Seth was deeply shocked by the loss of his son. His mental state changed. Knowing this, his wife advised Dagdu Seth to contact a Pandit. At that time, a saint (Pandit) advised Dagdu Seth to build a Ganesh temple in Pune. On the advice of the saint, Dagdu Seth built a Ganpati temple in Pune. Also, the idol of Ganesh ji was installed in the temple. It is also said that Bal Gangadhar Tilak started Ganesh Puja from Dagdu Seth temple. Even today, Ganesh Puja is performed with great pomp and show every year in Dagdu Seth temple. There is a religious belief that all the spoiled works of the devotee are resolved by having the darshan of Bappa in Dagdu Seth Ganpati temple.
