Tirupati: In Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district, on Saturday, a young man raped a 16-year-old girl and then set her on fire. After which the girl was being treated at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences but she died on Sunday morning.

The accused, Jakkala Vignesh, who is around 20 years old, committed the crime at a secluded spot in the forest. He was arrested on Saturday night and has confessed to the crime.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed the police to expedite the trial of the case in the special court and ensure that the accused gets death penalty.

Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Raju said that Vignesh had befriended the girl in childhood. Both of them fell in love. But he left her and married another girl, who is now pregnant.

When the minor continuously pressured Vignesh to marry her, he hatched a plan to eliminate her.

He said that investigation into the matter is ongoing.
