Bengaluru: Continuous rains for the last three days have created havoc in Bengaluru. Due to flooding in many areas, five teams of NDRF and SDRF were deployed on Tuesday to rescue people stranded in the city.

Meanwhile, many people have been trapped under the debris after a building under construction collapsed in the eastern part of the city. Rescue operations are underway. So far three bodies have been recovered. 14 people have been rescued, while three people are still missing. Meanwhile, two children have drowned in Kengeri Lake.

Holiday declared in schools

A fire department official said that according to preliminary investigation, the entire building collapsed after which people were trapped under it. Two rescue vans of the fire and emergency department have been deployed in the rescue operation. The building collapse incident has happened when heavy rains are continuously lashing many parts of the city. The authorities have also declared a school holiday on Wednesday.

North Bengaluru worst affected

After rains wreaked havoc in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has asked around 600 residents of some apartments to move for eight days as rainwater has flooded the premises, endangering people's safety. North Bengaluru has been hit the hardest by the rains as several areas in and around Yelahanka have been flooded. The central Vihar in Yelahanka is flooded with waist-deep water. Rescue workers evacuated people using boats.

Waterlogging disrupts life

Due to waterlogging, life in North Bengaluru has been disrupted. People are not able to go out of their homes, many passengers have missed flights, trains and buses. Children in waterlogged areas are not able to go to school. Water has entered many houses in low-lying areas and nearby lakes are overflowing. Vehicles and electrical appliances have been damaged.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains will continue in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for the next few days. Taking a dig at the Congress government of Karnataka for its handling of the rain situation, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that Bengaluru is not like Singapore but like Venice, which he had promised to transform. Venice is a city in Italy, where bridges and waterways are used for traffic. There are no roads here, people travel by boat to go from one place to another.

Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu too, weather department issues warning

It is raining continuously in many areas of Tamil Nadu. Due to heavy rains in Rameswaram, the city roads are flooded. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rains in the state. Heavy rains are expected in many districts of Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, heavy rains have also been predicted in other states including Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalaseema, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Gangetic Bengal.
