Dashanan Ravan is counted among powerful warriors and great scholars. But do you know who Ravan was in his previous life? Regarding the story of Ravan's previous life, it is said that Ravan had to take three births to attain salvation.
Why was the curse received
It is mentioned in Shrimad Bhagwat Purana that in his previous birth, Ravana was the gatekeeper of Lord Vishnu's Vaikunth Dham. Here Ravana's name was Jai. Along with him, there was also a gatekeeper named Vijay. According to the story, once sages like Sanak, Sanandan etc. reached to see Shri Hari Vishnu. But Jai Vijay stopped them at the door and said that the Lord is resting inside right now.
Hearing this, the sages became very angry and cursed them that both of you will be born as demons in your next life. On hearing this, both the gatekeepers started pleading for forgiveness from the sages. On this, the sages said that our curse cannot go in vain, but you will be born as a demon for 3 births and in every birth you will die at the hands of an incarnation of Vishnu ji, only then you will get freedom from this curse.
The story of the first birth
According to the curse, Jai-Vijay were born as demons named Hiranyakashyap and Hiranyaksha in their first birth. Once when Hiranyaksha hid the earth in the ocean, Lord Vishnu killed him in the form of Varaha and restored the earth to its place. His brother Hiranyakashipu was killed by Lord Vishnu in the form of Narasimha.
In what form did the second birth take place?
Jai-Vijay were born again as Ravan and Kumbhkarna. Ravan had kidnapped Sita. Then Lord Shri Ram, the 7th incarnation of Lord Shri Hari, killed Ravan and Kumbhkarna.
This is how I got salvation in my third birth
According to the legend, the third and last birth of Jai-Vijay was in the form of Shishupal and Dantavakra. Both were sons of Lord Krishna's aunt. Due to their evil deeds, they were killed in this birth by Lord Krishna, the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
