 Mohammad Mokhber: There is mourning in Iran at this time. President Ibrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter accident. The helicopter crashed on Sunday after which senior leaders of Iran called an emergency meeting regarding the current situation.

After the death of Ibrahim Raisi, Iran's Vice President Mohammad Mokhber Dezfuli can now be given the responsibility of assuming the post of interim President of Iran. Let us tell you that as interim president, Mokhber will be part of a three-member council along with the Speaker of the Parliament and the head of the judiciary. Iran will also organize new presidential elections within 50 days of President Raisi's death.  


Mohammad Mokhber is the closest to Iran's supreme leader 

  • Mokhber was born on September 1, 1955.
  • Mokhbar, like Raisi, is considered close to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
  • Mokhber became the first vice president after Raisi was elected president in 2021.
  • Mokhber was part of a team of Iranian officials who visited Moscow in October.
  • The team also included two senior officers of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and an official of the Supreme National Security Council.
  • Mokhber had agreed to supply the Russian military with surface-to-surface missiles and more drones.

  • Mokhber previously headed Setad, an investment fund linked to the supreme leader.
  • In 2010, the European Union added Mokhber to its banned list for alleged involvement in nuclear or ballistic missile activities. However, his name was removed from the list two years later. 
  • In 2013, the US Treasury Department added Setad and 37 of its affiliated companies to its list of sanctioned entities. 
  • Setad's full name is Setad Isray Farman Hazrate Imam. It was established under an edict issued by the Islamic Republic's founder, Khamenei's predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
  • It ordered its affiliates to sell and manage properties allegedly abandoned in the chaotic years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. 

What does the Constitution of Iran say?

In Iran, if the president dies during his term, the country's first vice president will assume the temporary presidency, subject to confirmation by the Supreme Leader, according to Article 131 of the constitution.
