In Assam, Magh Bihu is also known as Bhogali Bihu and Maghar Domahi. The day before Magh Bihu is called Uruka. This festival is actually dedicated to the fire god. This festival is celebrated in a traditional way. On this day, folk dishes like Aloo Pitika, Jak and Masor Tenga are made and everyone has a feast together. With this, the first crop is offered to the deity and it is wished that a good crop is produced in the coming time as well.

On the day of Uruka, people prepare a hut with the help of bamboo, leaves and thatch, which is called Meji. Food is prepared for the feast in this Meji and a community feast is enjoyed at night. The next morning this Meji is burned and its ashes are scattered in the fields. It is believed that doing so increases the fertility of the field.
